Bleeding paws and blood in urine
Posted Sunday, 31 January 2010 By Jennifer Ernst
Hello Dr Carol
My dog Falcon is a 2 1/2 year old German Short Hair Pointer. My father took him hunting, and after being out for a short while in the cold and ice, my dad noticed that Falcon's paws were all cut up and bleeding. He also began urinating blood. My dad immediately took Falcon to the vet. The vet did a CBC, Blood Chemistry and PT. All tests returned back normal. The vet also put Falcon on 75 mg of RIMADYL, twice daily. The vet felt the blood in the urine was stress related, and has not occured since. My question to you is, is there anything that we can do to toughen up Falcon's paws, as we certainly don't want this happening again. We did try booties, but Falcon would not wear them.
Thank you.

Help! I don't know what's happening to my dog!!!
Posted Wednesday, 05 May 2010 By Shelley
Ever since Sunday, my dog hasn't been behaving good. He used to love his crate, but now when we put him in it, he starts crying and barking. When we put the leash on him to take him on a walk, he bites me. Also, when we take him a shower, he bites everyone around him. he bites my mom so hard, even though she's wearing rough gloves, she still feels the pain and it burns her. I don't now what to do anymore and I can't cuddle with him unless I let him bite me. I'm begging you for help and I'm starting to lose hope in him. Thanks for all the help.

Barking and Ears
Posted Tuesday, 10 November 2009 By Bloodhound Dots
My bloodhound Annie always shakes her head when she barks and bays as if her ears get tickled when she does it. Is this typical or could there be an issue with her ears? She is 1 1/2 years old so I was thinking maybe she will grow out of the sensitivity. Interested in your opinion.

Feline Mega-Colon and Home Enemas
Posted Sunday, 29 November 2009 By Bobbi
Hello, Dr. Carol! Thank you so much for doing this! You're wonderful! :)
I'll start off with some history on my 12 year old male, DSH, Tuxedo kitty, Trixter. When Trixter was about 2 or so, he was struck by a car, which knocked his hips out of place. He avoided surgery and the vet just kind of "popped" his hips back into place. In '06 (age 9) he got very ill and was diagnosed with Diabetes. With a switch from dry to an all canned food, with 10% or less carb content, diet, two weeks of home-testing with a human glucometer, and insulin shots based on the results, Trixter went into remission and has had normal blood glucose levels since.
However, over the course of the last few years, Trixter has developed mega-colon, which causes chronic constipation. (Most likely caused by pelvic damage from the accident)We have tried many different methods, including adding fiber, giving him sticky, goopy Lactulose and cisapride (spelling?), etc. Finally we found something that works for him, which is OTC Miralax. Still, though, Trixter requires an occasional enema. At one point, I was having to take him to the vet for "clean outs" every other month or so, and ultimately decided that I need to do this at home to cut the stress level for him, and also cut costs, as I am very low income and take care of a colony (all spayed/neutered now!) of semi-feral and stray cats who were abandoned/neglected in my neighborhood. I have used mineral oil and warm water, about 60% water, 40% mineral oil for most of his enemas, but I am wondering if there is something you would recommend instead or in addition to that? I remember being told at one point that a little bit of mild soap with warm water can really help to "wash" out his insides, where obviously the feces builds up and causes a problem. The miralax seems to give his feces a "gloppy" texture, and I feel as though the mineral oil does not help to "wash it out" but instead may make it possibly stick worse to his intestinal walls. Would you recommend soap? If so, what kind? And what kind of water/soap ratio?
I am so sorry this got so long, I just wanted to give you enough information to understand Trixter's situation. Thank you so much!!

Myasthenia Gravis
Posted Tuesday, 01 December 2009 By Sarah Tymeson
My 9 yr old lab has myasthenia gravis. His primary symptom is megaesophagus which of course causes regurgitation and choking. Elevating his food helps as well as feeding him in smaller portions.
Are there any alternative treatments for this? I'm reluctant to go the route of steroids and all if there is something else available.
Also, would putting some blocks or something in the bottom of his dish to slow his eating maybe help as well?? This was a "new" idea I had this week and wondered if it would actually be effective.
Thanks!

Anal Gland Problems
Posted Monday, 14 December 2009 By Jennifer Ernst
Hello Dr Carol,
My dog, a German Short Hair Pointer, is constantly having problems with his anal glands. This requires a visit to the vet every 3 weeks. Is this a breed specific problem, or larger dog problem? Should I expect this to continue throughout his life, or is this something he will out grow? Falcon is now 2.
Thanks you so much.

Pink Eye
Posted Wednesday, 16 December 2009 By Sarah Horowitz
Hello Dr Carol,
I have pink eye, and my dog sleeps with me. I know that pink eye is very contagious, so my question is, can my dog catch it from me?
Thank you so much.
